Honey Purity: Do Home Tests Work?
Short answer: no kitchen test can confirm that honey is pure. A spoon sinking in water, a drop staying on your thumb, a flame test, or a particular thickness is not a reliable way to prove what is in a jar.
Crystallisation is normal. Honey can form crystals as it is stored, and the speed varies with its natural composition and storage conditions. Crystals do not prove that honey is pure, and liquid honey is not proof that it is fake.
Taste, aroma, colour and texture can help you describe a honey, but they cannot verify its source or rule out added sweeteners. Research on honey authenticity explains why laboratory assessment can require several analytical methods, especially when adulteration is sophisticated.
Before buying, ask for the honey variety and source information, the pack size, and a batch-specific laboratory report if one is available. A clear answer about what has and has not been tested is more useful than a viral home test.
